Bearded dragons are popular pets known for their calm temperament, unique appearance, and curious personalities. If you’re new to owning a bearded dragon or considering getting one, here’s a comprehensive guide on everything you need to know for proper care.
1. Setting Up the Ideal Habitat
Enclosure Size: Adult bearded dragons need a tank of at least 40-75 gallons. Bigger is always better, as it gives them space to explore.
Temperature: They require a gradient of temperatures. The basking area should be between 95-110°F, while the cooler side can be 75-85°F.
UVB Lighting: UVB light is essential for their health, helping them process calcium and preventing metabolic bone disease. Replace the UVB bulb every 6-12 months, as UV output diminishes over time.
Substrate: Use reptile carpet, newspaper, or tile. Avoid sand, as it can cause impaction if ingested.
2. Proper Diet and Nutrition
Insects: Bearded dragons are omnivorous. Feed juveniles daily with crickets, mealworms, or roaches, dusted with calcium powder. Adults can eat insects every other day.
Vegetables: A mix of leafy greens (collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens) should be available daily. Fruits like apples or berries can be given as treats. Supplements: Calcium and vitamin D3 supplements are essential, especially if their UVB exposure is limited.
3. Hydration
Water: While bearded dragons don’t drink a lot of water, they still need a shallow dish available.
